If you are renovating or extending a domestic, commercial or industrial property, or if you are moving your meter, you may need to make alterations to your gas, electricity and/or water connections. At National Energy Direct, we’re a one-stop shop for all of your utility needs, including making changes such as an extension to your connections. In this handy guide, we’ll be explaining the steps you need to take in order to apply for an extension to your water, electricity and gas supplies.

How to Apply for an Extension to Existing Water, Electricity and Gas Connections

Obtain Planning Permission

First things first, before applying for any work on your utility connections, it’s absolutely essential for you to have obtained planning permission and any other local authority permits for your project if you are going to be making significant changes to the property with an extension or renovation. We insist on first obtaining this because a lot of time goes into the planning and designing of your new or extended connections and if your plans end up getting changed due to denied planning permission, this work will likely have to be redone, costing you time and money.

Similarly, all of the land that you want us to carry out work on must be owned by you or you must seek written permission from the landowner in order for us to proceed with any alterations to your connections.

Send Us the Necessary Information

Once all permissions have been granted, you will need to provide our team with some necessary information. This will give us an idea about the kind of work you’re looking for, the size of the project and will allow us to submit an application to the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) early on to prevent any delays further down the line. The DNOs are responsible for the distribution of electricity from the National Grid to your property, so it’s absolutely essential to have their approval before the project commences.

You will need to provide us with the following information:

Once you have sent this information over to us and we have received it, we will get to work and start designing your gas, water and electricity alterations and send you a CAD drawing of the plans for your approval or changes to ensure you are fully satisfied with the alterations.

With any changes made and your full approval, we will then liaise with the local council about the legality of the work before then sending it to the DNOs for final approval. Once everything has been approved and finalised, we will schedule in the work and get started.
